Nationals 2007 Results
Two hundred and twenty four - that was the average daily catch at the 2007 XXXX Gold barra Nationals fished on the Daly River.
Overall, 165 fishers in 55 teams fished in hot conditions, catching and releasing 1121 barramundi - six measuring in at more than 1m - during the five day tournament from April 24 to 28.
Only four failed to catch a fish at all.
With little in it, the fight for honours went down to the wire, with top teams Diesel and Dust and Polar Bears going head to head at the same creek mouth for 8 hours, catching 73 fish between them on the final day of competition.
And while they were out fished on the day 49 fish to 24, Diesel and Dust, comprising Steve Taylor, Joe Lavery and Brian Lund eventually claimed the mantle of champion team.
Polar Bears )Bert Woodward, Jimmy Politis and Peter Politis) finished second on 3869, while Cranky and Crew (husband and wife John and Jennifer Mondora and Ian Leighton) were third on 2377.
Champion angler overall went to Diesel and Dust's Steve Taylor, on 1778 points, followed by Bear's Bert Woodward (1662) and Peter Politis (1637).
Woodward also claimed the biggest fish - a 110cm beauty caught at the S-Bends.
Barra Nationals co-coordinator Paul Williams said it was good to come back from a tough 2006 event that was hampered by the flood waters from Cyclone Monica to such a high quality showing this year. "The fishing was tough, and it was hard work, but there where quality fish caught - and 1000 fish is the benchmark of a good tournament catch," he said.
"From my point of view it was one of the better we've had".
"The nationals is renowned for entrants having a lot of fun and good times, and some great fishing - but this was one of the outstanding one's in terms of being such a well rounded tournament."
"With the fish caught, the venue set up like it was and with the river being at almost perfect height, it was great."
The event, which is based at Banyan Farm, has the backing of many businesses, and one that is particularly proud of its association is major sponsor Lion Nathan.
"Through XXXX Gold we have been their major sponsors for a number of years now and we are very proud to be associated as a business partner the the Nationals'" Lion Nathan sales executive Sam Kolpondinos said.
"It is one, if not the Biggest barra Competition run in Australia and we are looking forward to partnering them again next year."
